Murphy’s seal of approval.

V8 Supercar driver Greg Murphy is the Patron of the Rotorua Kartsport Development Trust and became the first person to test the international kartsport circuit being constructed in Rotorua.

The major earthworks are now completed and the specialised asphalt track was recently laid and has been curing over the last few weeks.

Greg took the opportunity to explore the circuit in a Right Karts Rotax Max kart and enthused that it was the best track he had run on in Australasia and that when completed it would be a world class facility. He felt it will be an incredible asset for both local families and aspiring champions from around the country.

Many top level motor sport competitors prove themselves in karting and almost all current Formula One drivers have performed well in karting.

Before racing can begin at the complex, safety fencing, services and a race control building and systems need to be in place and details of these were revealed to prospective supporters at an afternoon of celebrations for the achievements to date.

Reg Hennessey, spokesman for the Trust on the day, congratulated the Rotorua District Council and Mike Lowe from Hayes International for making substantial contributions to the next phase of the community project and also welcomed Temprite Industries Ltd, Hickeys Contractors Ltd, Aries Steel Construction Ltd and Andersen Drainage Ltd as project partners. He encouraged more local businesses to supply goods and services to help the project to a conclusion.

Of the $ 3.4 million required for the total project approximately $2.3 million has now been raised.

Subject to the balance of funds to be raised the complex is expected to offer competition by spring 2009.

New International KartSport circuit

and programme for young drivers

An exciting community project for Rotorua and the Bay of Plenty providing a new sporting and young driver training facility was announced today.

Rotorua KartSport Development Trust is building an internationally rated KartSport circuit in Rotorua that will provide entry level motor racing opportunities in karts for families in the region.

The number of families involved in the sport is expected to increase substantially with a home town track that will be used for club, regional and national events.

The world class facility, unique in New Zealand, will bid for international events adding to Rotorua’s status as a leading visitor venue.

The Trust is planning the introduction of training and education programmes for young drivers at the facility with the focus of getting better and more responsible drivers in real cars on our roads.

KartSport Trust Chairman Fraser McKenzie says, “We have received support from a number of organisations including BayTrust and the Lion Foundation.”

“It is a happy partnership as we all share the same objectives of bringing benefits to our local and wider communities, particularly families and youth.”

Fund raising is approximately 50 per cent complete, earthworks are well underway and first use of the facility is planned for 2009.

Rotorua launches project to create an international KartSport circuit and a programme for young drivers.

An exciting community project providing a new sporting and young driver training facility in Rotorua was announced today.

Rotorua KartSport Development Trust is building an internationally rated KartSport circuit in Rotorua that will provide entry level motor racing opportunities in karts for families in the region. The number of families involved in the sport is expected to increase substantially with a home town track that will be used for club, regional and national events.  The Trust is planning the introduction of training and education programmes for young drivers at the facility. This will be focused on having better educated and more responsible drivers in real cars on our roads.

RKDTrust Chairman Fraser McKenzie says “Our plans have been supported very substantially by two extremely helpful organisations. The Lion Foundation have assisted the project from the beginning with critical funding and project advice and the Rotorua Energy Charitable Trust have provided a level of funding that makes a huge difference. It is a happy partnership as we all share the same objectives of bringing benefits to our local and wider communities, particularly targeted to families and youth”.

Fund raising is approximately 60 per cent complete, with the bulk of the earthworks and drainage finished and the construction and sealing of the track recently finalised. Work remaining to be funded and completed includes the supporting buildings and services, safety systems and landscaping. The first use of the facility is planned for the third-quarter of 2009.
