The Trust's Objectives

The Trust's objective is to act as a charitable benefactor and catalyst, to responsibly manage assets built from donations, to provide sponsors with the maximum opportunity to take advantage of their contributions and see that all users and beneficiaries of the circuit enjoy their participation.

The Vision

By 2010 the Trust will have created the best kart track in New Zealand, and

  • Provided the Rotorua community with an internationally rated and approved KartSport circuit which has successfully been used for local, national and at least one international competition event. (Rotax Max World Championship?)
  • Arranged sufficient hireage of the facility to contribute significantly to the management and maintenance costs.
  • Arranged for events to take place that allow the wider community and particularly young people to experience and participate in karting.  The events should include learning to drive a kart and competitive racing.
  • Be running a young drivers programme which contributes to a reduction in young driver road accidents.
  • Brought significant financial and social benefit to the Rotorua community through increased visitor activity.

KartSport

The sport of racing karts evolved from simple beginnings in the 1950s to become a truly international sport.  Modern karts feature sophisticated design and materials and provide the thrills and excitement of motor racing at a relatively low cost.  The sport provides opportunities for everyone from 6 upwards to enjoy both fun and serious competition in a safe and controlled environment.

KartSport is popular because it embraces several options.  It can be a whole family fun hobby, it can offer the mechanically minded the opportunity to invent solutions and get the best performance from chassis and engines, it can offer young people training in the use of motor vehicles and there are multiple levels of competition where organisations, decisions and skills determine the outcome.

Rotorua Karters Incorporated was established in 1990 and is one of 20 clubs affilitated to KartSport New Zealand.  Clubs run events on licenced and annually inspected circuits according to KartSport New Zealand rules and safety plans.

KartSport New Zealand is the national controlling body and through Motor Sport New Zealand interfaces with the international motor sport controlling organisation, the Federation Internationale de L'automobile (FIA) and its karting section Commission Internationale de Karting (CIK).

  Rotorua Karters Inc.

Since it was established in 1990 Rotorua Karters has attracted a number of competitors/members who race at meetings around the country.  The lack of a local track has made it difficult for interested locals to experience introductory racing and hampered the growth of the club.  Club events have been held at Hamilton, Tokoroa, Te Puke, Edgecumbe, Taumarunui and Taupo.

In 2003 Rotorua Karters began planning a karting track for Rotorua and in 2005 set up the Rotorua KartSport Development Trust to further the project.  A charitable trust is a more appropriate legal entity to manage the substantial fundraising and subsequent asset ownership.
